Her voice is more familiar than his own, more familiar than his own mother's. It's the feeling of home and welcome and belonging and he never knows if he really told her that before but he lets what the sound of her voice does to him, the wounds it heals, the old scars it soothes, the pure need and answer, wash out of him and into the Drift with her, for her.
He's the Raleigh she remembers - and he's more than that. He's not the cocky, undefeated, easy youth he was the last time they were together... and he's not the torn, hollow, confused and utterly broken husk he was before their last disconnect either. Those echoes are still there, on the edge of himself as he comes to her, deep whirlpools inside of him but he's changed since then. The eagerness has been tempered, the cockiness beaten into something different. He comes back to her a warrior, not a fighter the way he once was and he comes back to her with a quiet, patient strength that was only hints and untested when they were last together. When his smile washes through their connection it's older and wiser and somehow sweeter because of the pain. There's sorry and guilt and an understanding of her forgiveness as well as a new, endless determination to do better and a bottomless joy when he says:
